Quito, Ecuador Waste management

About the project

Reciveci is a citizen initiative that promotes inclusive recycling in Ecuador. We are a group of volunteers in Quito that work together to build a recycling culture by creating a human bond between the waste pickers and the citizen.

In Ecuador there are approximately 20000 waste pickers, more than 60% are women and their income is around 280 USD per month, women are the ones that maintain their families with the income earned from recycling. Besides, being part of an informal sector that is socially and economically excluded, prevents them from having access to social security, loans and regular benefits available for an ordinary citizen.

On the other hand, the access to recyclable materials is limited due to the lack of knowledge on correct source separation of solid waste at source. Thus, there is a need to improve and increase solid waste source separation in Quito-Ecuador, as only 25% of potentially recyclable material is used in new productive processes and the remaining solid waste ends up in landfills or open dumps.

So, one of the objectives of ReciVeci is to train neighbors on solid waste source separation so that they can deliver the recyclable material directly to the waste picker and so to create a direct link between these two actors. As a pilot project ReciVeci will begin working in a small neighborhood in Quito, the neighborhood has 12000 inhabitants whom will be the beneficiaries. The team of volunteers together with the waste pickers will start a training campaing for solid waste source separation.

The challenge is to implement an Effective training for solid waste source separation.

We are committed to ReciVeci and the waste pickers with whom we have developed a unique bond. The team have been working for approximately 6 months and as we are volunteers, each one of us invests around 10 hours a week on the project.
